MAXIMUM EXPRESSION

The Maggie Pills

Seeing The Maggie Pills live is like eating a fistful of candy after you’ve had a long day and just need something sweet and satisfying to curb those cravings.  Bursting forth from the stage, Delfi’s amazing vocal style is  augmented by  her unique theatrical delivery, while the band – from the stomp of the drums and the thrill of the keys to the loping bass and guitar shrill – comes together to create a fun music dynamic that promises a good time for everyone. To find out more, we caught up with Delfi to check out what’s been happening in the land of The Maggie Pills.

Please tell us a bit about yourselves and how the band got together – what’s in the history?
After a decade playing in the Buenos Aires scene with our separate acts and projects, me and my partner Mario decided to move to Australia and try our luck forming a band on the other side of the world. We recorded an EP with our friends in ‘Lxs Pares’ and played gigs together for a few months, and then flew to Melbourne. In order of priorities and how it actually happened: ‘1. Find a roof, 2. Find musos to form a band, 3. Get a job. 4. Play as many gigs as you can.’

The Maggie Pills started in September 2019 and has been the best trip. Since then, we’ve released one double LP, two EPs, several singles and clips. We’re now having the best time working on our sophomore album.

Who or what would you say has influenced you – and the band – both musically and personally?
The who: I started singing because of my brother, who had been into music since very little and inspired me to start. Since little I was surrounded by many creatives in my family.  I then graduated to being in bands and feel I’ve been shaped by every bandmate I wrote songs and performed with.

For The Maggie Pills, it’s the bands that we play with. Those artists who relentlessly create and transmit their work, and just don’t stop. Plus a lot of Pixies, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Breeders, Portishead, and more and more.

The what: Present experiences. Every conversation, every person we meet and how the things that happen around us make us feel or react. Our journey creating a new life away from our home and the creative encounters with our band mates and colleagues. The music we grew up with, and the new artists we discover day by day.

You recently released a split 7” single with The Stripp – can you tell us how it all came about and what was the inspiration for your song, GOLD?
We had previously released a split 7” with The Miffs via Tuff Cuff Records. We had a great experience working together with Tuff Cuff, so we decided to do another one. We had already played gigs with The Stripp, and they seemed like a great match to make this record with. And it was! We had the best time in our joint Regional VIC tour.

So, we wrote GOLD, which is inspired by the value that everyone has but how much of it is overlooked because it doesn’t fit the beauty or cultural standards. Convention is king in this world, and it causes others to feel left out or like we don’t have the right to shine, to be gold. It’s about being our maximum expression, no matter how chaotic, without impositions or conditions.

How would you describe your sound and how do you feel this has changed and evolved over time?
Our sound is something that we are always in the search of. I think that’s why it’s so hard for us to put it in a box with a label. We love trying different things and pushing our limits every time we write something new. Our first releases had more of an indie sound, and with time both our recordings and live shows have become louder and more dramatic, frenetic and full of drama and bringing even more of our influences to the table.

What’s coming up next for you – tell us everything!
We’re now working on our second album which we plan to release in mid 2025. We’re having a great time at the studio and it’s very exciting to hear new sounds coming up.
In the meantime, we’ll be playing a few gigs and enjoying ourselves!
