ALARMS
Are you ready to get loud?! Hell yeah you are! Welcome to the world of the ALARMS, a bright, noisy soundscape where a brilliant time will be had by all. Rocking out with a chaotic bent of adrenaline, if you like heavy tunes with a side order of apocalypse, then you will not be disappointed my friends. We reached out through the cyberspace to ask them what’s been going on in the ALARMS’ sphere, and what’s coming up next.
Please tell us about yourselves – who are you all and how did ALARMS get together – what’s in the history?
Parso and I have been playing together for ages. We’d been toying with the idea of writing heavier stuff for a while – and finally got some time during lockdown to record some demos. Alex started working with us to thrash out live versions of those songs. When we brought in Jase – he delivered so much energy and showmanship – we kind of just took it from there. Our drummer Slatts has only just joined us this year, and we’re looking forward to playing and writing new material with him.
You released your Underwater E.P last year – can you tell us a bit about how it all came together?
Underwater was a bit of a surprise, really. We wanted to get into the studio and record some tracks, but I was worried that I would get tangled up in the process, and get stuck doing endless remixing and polishing. Mick at Trash Cult introduced me to Alex Bennett from Sound Recordings and his analogue set-up at Campbell’s Creek sounded perfect. We rolled in, just expecting to do two tracks, but we sort of hit our stride and ended up doing the five songs that we released as the EP over the course of two days.
Who would you say has influenced you musically and personally?
We’re influenced by a lot of stuff. The group has a really wide range of taste in music and our personal creative influences vary considerably. There’s also a lot of overlap in everyone’s tastes and I guess that’s where we get our sound from. I think we have a fairly good collective idea of what we’re working toward musically and with our shows, and we generally use the elements of our influences that make that happen. There’s a lot of post-punk and noise-rock in what we do, and it’s obvious that we have heavy influences too, but I think there’s also some pop in there. We’re always surprised when people tell us what they hear in our music, it’s rarely anything we think we sound like.
What would be your most memorable gig to date and why?
We’ve played with a lot of great bands, and we’re super lucky to have Trash Cult in town. There’s such a great scene and we get to see and meet a heap of awesome artists all the time. It’s really hard to pick one out. Probably my favourite shows are when we’re playing with our friend’s bands – when we get to be part of the audience and part of the show. Those are great times.
What’s coming up next for you?
We’ll have a new video for Defence Wounds (from the Underwater EP) ready soon. We’re also working on a new album and we’ll have a single out from that as soon as we can. I’d really like to get the album out before the end of this year, but we’re trying not to put too much pressure on ourselves – we just want to make sure we’re happy with what we release next.
