The Stripp
The Stripp are f*cking brilliant – there I said it. Which is why it’s simply outrageous that it took me so long to get to one of their shows. There just always seemed to be some sort of stupid calendar conflict, and it got to the point where it was driving me a little crazy, because they really do sound bloody awesome! Finally though, the stars aligned – halle-fraking-luhya! So, what can you expect when you go to see The Stripp? Only a wild ride of electric proportions that will burst your ear drums in the best possible way. You gotta go see them for yourselves, but in the meantime…
Please tell us a bit about yourselves and how the band got together?
The Stripp was born a bastard child of previous bands before becoming its own thing. Bek and I were playing in another band (I was playing drums at the time) and we both had a bunch of riffs and ideas and thought it’d be fun to start a new band.
We mustered up a couple of mates to join us, but only managed to get 3 shows under our belts before the Covid lockdowns hit. We basically spent lockdown writing and ended up with a bunch of songs that became the first album! After going through a few line-up changes, we eventually found Matt and Alex and the rest, as they say, is history!
Who or what would you say has influenced you – and the band – both musically and personally?
Each of us has quite different tastes and influences, but we all love bands like The Hellacopters, ZEKE, Supersuckers, Nashville Pussy etc.. It’s all part of the evolution of bands that started this style like The Sonics, MC5 and The Stooges.
How do you feel your style and sound has evolved over time?
We’re always discovering new music and so our influences are ever changing – Bek seems to have a new favourite band every week haha. Different flavours you know, or you get pallet fatigue.
Although we’re a “rock” band, it’s important to us that we don’t get stuck in any niche or try to fit into a genre. It’s like a lucky dip seeing how the next song is going to come out.
You’re about to be stranded on a desert island and can only bring 5 things – what are they and why?
Well, if we’ve learnt anything from Cast Away it’s that we’re gonna need a boat! Can we bring a boat? I think we’ll bring a boat! Actually, with the current state of the world a deserted island sounds like paradise haha. Bek can’t live without peanut butter, it’s her main source of sustenance, so we’re gonna need to cultivate a small peanut farm. And potatoes (we googled if potatoes grow in sand – they do!), enough burger rings to last until the potatoes grow and the latest issues of Women’s Weekly and New Idea so we don’t go stir crazy and strangle each other to death for the sheer thrill.
What’s coming up next for you?
Like most bands we just wanna be on tour and live the John Belushi lifestyle. This is our outlet, so we just wanna have as much fun with it as possible. We have a ton of wacky ideas that we’d like to see come into fruition. We’re enjoying the ride and have met so many great people along the way and just wanna push this thing as far as we can.
